Seaweave focuses on BioID+ applications where individuals may be recognised through stable visual cues and paired with useful biological parameters.
Seaweave’s strongest current BioID+ momentum is in crustacea, where visual features and morphology may support repeated recognition of individuals over time. This area represents an important near-term opportunity for identity-led marine machine vision.
The same approach may also have relevance in finfish where visual patterning, form or other consistent cues allow individuals to be distinguished. Preliminary work in New Zealand has indicated BioID potential in snapper, a member of the Sparidae, or sea bream, family.
Not every species will be equally suited to BioID+. Applicability depends on whether individuals exhibit sufficiently stable and distinguishable visual markers, and whether those markers can be observed consistently enough for repeatable recognition.
Potential applications may span research, aquaculture and fisheries where better biological insight can support decision-making, observation or longitudinal tracking.
